The Byrne Residence

Nevada County, CA

An expansive ranch headquarters located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Designed for rustic elegant living and energy efficiency.

This extensive remodel and addition of a dreary modest 1980s ranch-style home into a modern ranch estate home shows what can be done to completely change the character of an existing house. We doubled the size, designed a very inviting entry porch, created a new master bedroom wing including an office, library, master bath, and updated the old interior to match the new aesthetic.

The addition is built with highly efficient structural panels clad with a metal roof and warmly stained Cement board plank siding. Natural logs add a touch of rustic strength to the wood-arched front entry porch. Fine craftsmanship throughout makes this a wonderful place to relax and entertain. All rooms look out over a creek and attention was spent framing extensive views of this wooded site. Modern heat pump air conditioning and energy-efficient appliances and lighting are powers by a solar electric system.

Marden Residence

Shingle Springs, CA

This rambling rustic lodge style ranch house is located in oak woodland horse country. The owner -builder is a professional contractor framer woodworker who has crafted many of the finest homes in the north San Francisco bay area.

The program, was to create a dramatic headquarters house for a working horse ranch, divided into 4 sections: utility with gum, guest quarters, rustic living area and intimate master quarters. The expansive house wraps around a native oak studded hill, with the pastures and barns below. An outdoor living area will include summer kitchen gazebo and swimming pool/spa, over looks a wooded basin in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Highly efficient, the house is designed to heat and cool itself naturally, supplemented by solar powered air conditioning. The fireplaces are for comfort and charm. The owner handcrafted the rich wood beam ceilings and rock features. The exterior is clad in fire proof materials with interior fire sprinklers. This gracious home is designed for casual comfort, and to take advantage of the stunning site.

Dulmage Residence & Guest House

Nevada City, CA

This finely crafted home is an example of what I call “Modern Mountain Craftsman” or “Contemporary Tahoe” style architecture. Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, it is designed to heat and cool itself naturally, and to blend with the forest environment.

The home consists of three elements; a two bedroom guest house and a one bedroom main house, separated by a large common outdoor deck terrace, with a covered connecting breezeway.

The home is designed with passive solar heating concepts, as are all of my projects, despite the north facing sloping site. The roof and walls are constructed using structural insulated panel (SIP) technology giving an almost airtight weather skin. A radiant heated floor throughout provides high efficiency warmth and the interior plaster, rock fireplaces and floor tile add to the thermal mass, which helps with both heating and cooling. The dramatic north facing great room windows and vaulted ceiling enclose a large gable roof which accommodates a large solar electric array and solar hot water collector on the roof. The natural looking exterior is clad with forest green metal roofing, cedar stained cement-fiber lap siding, and field stone veneer. This maintenance free and fire resistant combination of materials and textures create an elegant rustic organic appearance. Inside wood and slate tile floors, plastered walls, stone fireplaces and Douglas fir wood paneled ceilings continue the warm aesthetic. The high vaulted ceiling frames a north view window wall creating a wonderful dynamic indoor-outdoor feeling. This small home exudes comfort, coziness and elegance, because of the palate of rich natural materials, attention to detail, and fine craftsmanship.

Alexander Residence

El Dorado County, CA

Known as the “TREE HOUSE” this three story modernist home is located on a steep wooded parcel of land fronting the south Fork of the American River in Eldorado County, California. The site is above 5000 feet elevation in snow country of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

The house is nestled into a very tight hillside footprint which required a vertically oriented floor plan scheme. The garage, work, storage and rooms are on the ground floor. The second floor contains living, dining, kitchen, powder, and guest room with an open two story ceiling above the living area. A dramatic walkway bridge access the main entry door on this level. The master suite is on the third floor, along with the study/office which is open overlooking the living area below. The roof level is a roof terrace with stunning views of the surrounding forest and river; this roof terrace is the outside barbecue and entertainment area because of the steep hillside and lack of flat usable outdoor space.

A 4 story elevator encircled by a winding stairway is enclosed in a tower element that accesses all levels. This vertical element is clad with Corten rusting vertical corrugated sheet metal to differentiate it from the habitable floor rooms that are finished on the exterior with green colored horizontal cementious lap siding and glass. The SIP structure provides high strength and energy efficiency and is a classic example of using the structural component modules in a structure designed to optimize their interlocking nature. The roof is clad in concrete pavers making the structure fireproof in this high fire zone.

The structural elements are carefully detailed and crafted creating a structure that is distinct and stands out in the natural setting. Functionally located the windows reflect the surrounding forest and allow almost panoramic views from the interior spaces. The top level glass railing provides an unobstructed view from the terrace and adds to the reflective quality of the high structure.

The inside spaces are filled with artwork and are a very comfortable place to view the surroundings particularly when snow falls turning the site into a winter wonderland. The owners are audiophiles and they have installed a carefully tuned and balanced sophisticated sound system that fills the house with music. This handsome house makes the most of a decidedly difficult building site.

Richardson Residence

Swall Meadows, Mono County, CA

This Modern “Mid Century Modern” style high mountain home replaces a 1970s cabin that was destroyed in a forest fire. It is a 3,500 SF, three story, three-bedroom house built to be fire proof, energy efficient and take advantage of the awesome view. The main living area on the ground level accommodates the retiring active couple, the second floor two bedrooms, bath and family room are for visiting families, and the third story “Crows Nest” is to relax and enjoy the magnificent long-distance views. All levels are accessed via a bright red spiral stair giving the house a dramatic vertical element both inside and out. The house is built of SIP panels engineered for very heavy snow and wind loads. The almost flat roof, designed to carry the deep snow, is desired in high mountain locations because the snow adds insulation and does not slide off damaging the roof and piling deep around the house.

O'Rear Residence

Rollins Lake, CA

A 21st Century Contemporary 2 story vacation home, built to take advantage of the wonderful lake view, this house is designed to function on two levels for a large family, or be used by separate renters, as a VRBO. Outside porches and patios provide ample opportunity to dine and relax outdoors taking full advantage of the lake view.

The exterior features a corrugated metal clad, curved two story stair element that defines the vertical circulation and gives the house a distinctly modern flair. The house is highly energy efficient and fire proof, all the exterior materials and roof are non-combustible materials. Visitors comment on what an attractive modern house this is, making the owners proud to have designed something different.

Maedge Residence

Loomis, CA

Designed for a young active family of four, this Modern Farm House style house is a simple economical structure. The open two-story great room allows large gatherings, workshops for groups or intimate family evenings. A shaded, out-door porch along the east exposure is a natural outdoor extension to the living area. Both parents work from home, the wife’s nutrition business hosts home workshops; her office is for public consulting visits, the husband’s office is private for a computer professional. The upstairs loft, overlooking the great room, is a place for the kids to hang out independent of adults.

The weather skin is specially constructed to resist the hot California valley summers when air conditioning rates are high. Careful placement of windows, roof overhangs and skylights provide natural ventilation cooling and shading. A large solar electric array on the detached garage provides all the power needed for a zoned heat pump system, water heating, lights, appliances and equipment. The owners are very pleased with the comfort and cost of operating the multi- zoned heat pump system.
